Internet threats are ever present and have made their presence known. The news is riddled with stories about breaches and data theft, but, a common threat is the attack of Ransomware.
When these threats hit an organization, there can be significant costs incurred. These costs can be from the actual theft of electronic funds, from recovery of systems (even if ransom is not paid), loss of productivity, and also from loss of confidence from the public or customers. Often the costs are significant. Sometimes, there are incidents with costs that are enough to prevent an organization from being able to move forward.
While Cybersecurity begins with the hardware and software implemented by an organization, and the success or effectiveness of said hardware and software is measured by the quality and practices implemented by the IT Department, the last line of defence for any organization is always the users.
Most threats do not occur as a result of a hacker penetrating systems. Most breaches are a result of a user clicking on a link (website or email) or opening an email attachment which carries malware designed to create "backdoors" or encrypt data. Teaching users how to differentiate between legitimate links/attachments and possible threats can mean all the difference.
